Rachel Barton

Violinist Rachel Barton Pine has an extraordinary ability to connect with people. A leading interpreter of classic and contemporary works, her performances combine her gift for emotional communication and her fascination with research. She plays with passion and conviction, thrilling audiences with her dazzling technique, lustrous tone, and infectious joy in music-making.

This season Pine will offer the world premiere of “Violin Concerto No. 2,” written for her by Billy Childs and co-commissioned by the Grant Park Music Festival, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, and the Interlochen Orchestra. She’ll solo with the Chicago Symphony, the Mississippi Symphony, Orchestre Symphonique Quebec, the Tel Aviv Soloists, the Pacific Symphony, and Vancouver (WA) Symphony. She’ll perform with Lara Downes at Ravinia, with pianist Matthew Hagle, and harpsichordist Jory Vinikour.

She has appeared with prestigious ensembles including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, and the Vienna and Detroit Symphony Orchestras.

Her past chart-topping albums include Dvořák and Khachaturian Violin Concertos (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Teddy Abrams); Mozart: Complete Violin Concertos, Sinfonia Concertante (Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner), and Bel Canto Paganini.

Pine has led the Rachel Barton Pine (RBP) Foundation which assists young artists since 2001. Over the last 20 years, the RBP Foundation’s Music by Black Composers (MBC) project has collected more than 900 works by 450+ Black composers from the 18th–21st centuries, curated free repertoire directories, and published print resources.

Orchestra Solist the January 16th Program
Ruth Solin – Oboe
Cindy Gould – Trumpet

Ruth Solin, Principal Oboe, received a M.Mus. in oboe performance from Northwestern University, and a B.Mus. in instrumental music education from Arizo- na State University. She studied with Ray Still, Grover Schiltz, Peter Bowman, Frank Stalzer, and Harvey Zorn. As an orchestral oboist, Ruth has performed with many symphony orchestras including: the Lake Forest Symphony, Elgin Symphony, Elmhurst Symphony, South
Bend Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Phoenix Symphony, and San Juan Symphony, as well as chamber music with: The Chicago Chamber Orchestra, The Chicago Winds Quintet, Viva Musica Trio, and Phoenix Chamber Orchestra. Ruth toured East Germany in 1989 as a member of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, which was a guest ensemble of the East German government. Currently Ruth performs with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, Prescott Symphony Orchestras, Prescott Chorale Orchestra, Master Chorale of Flagstaff, and Park Avenue Quintet. She is often heard in the ‘pit’ for musical theater productions at Yavapai College Performing Arts Center.

Cindy Gould has been principal trumpet of the Flag- staff Symphony Orchestra since 2001. She is also princi- pal with Arizona Philharmonic Orchestra, Verde Valley Sinfonietta and regularly performs with the Prescott Pops Symphony, San Juan Symphony in Durango, CO and NAU Elden Brass Quintet. Ms. Gould received her Master’s Degree in trumpet performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music and Music Education
degree from the University of Montana. She has taught at Kansas State University, Wright State University and Northern Arizona University. In Cincinnati she was a member of the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Hamilton Symphony Orchestra, and Ohio Valley Brass Quintet. In Seattle she was a member of the Washington Brass Ensemble, Bellevue Philharmonic, and Washington Wind Symphony. She has also performed in the 1996 and 1998 Arizona Opera productions of Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Her teachers include Louis Ranger, Susan Slaughter, Marie Speziale, and Philip Collins.
